What is Electrical Equipment Testing

Electrical Equipment testing (PAT Testing) is the process of periodically testing your electrical appliances. Testing covers all items of equipment that have a plug attached. Testing is carried out on all Items including hand held, portable, stationary, fixed and moveable electrical equipment. Testing your electrical equipment helps to ensure they are effectively maintained and safe to use within the appropriate environment according to the manufacturers specifications.

 

Electrical testing is an essential part of a company's health & safety policy to ensure that staff aren't put at risk and are harmed by any electrical equipment within the business premises. PAT testing should be carried out regularly to to protect employees, customers and yourself, against any accident and liability within the work place. PAT Testing is carried out by a business in accordance with guidelines stated in the IEE Code of Practice.

 

Meaning of "PAT Testing"

 

Portable Appliance Testing is abbreviated to "PAT Testing" is in fact a tautology in the same way that some people say "LCD Display"

 

However the phrase is commonly used in the industry even though most people realise it is incorrect. The correct term for the whole process is "in-service inspection & testing of Electrical Equipment.

 

Why Test?

 

The legislation of specific relevance to electrical maintenance is the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, the management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations 1999, the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989, the Workplace (Health,Safety & Wefare) Regulations 1992 and the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998.

 

The Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 puts the duty of care both on the employer and the employee to ensure the safety of all persons using the work premises. This includes the self employed. 

 

The IEE Code of practice for inservice inspection and Testing of Equipment sets out the standard to which each appliance is comprehebsively tested. It is reccommended that you use the latest PAT Testing equipment. We will test all IT equipment, Kettles and microwaves. The Inspection should only be carried by a fully qualified PAT testing engineer.
